What does INOX actually mean at Merkur?
When Merkur talks about Inox, it simply means stainless or corrosion resistant steel. The name comes from the French adjective inoxydable (German: not oxidizable). In other words, a super material with the best possible protection against rust, which lasts a very long time even with intensive contact with water. Inox basically stands for particularly high quality stainless steel alloys with a high content of nickel and chromium as alloying elements. The razor heads are manufactured using the MIM process from 316L (1.4404) and are characterized by very good corrosion resistance. The handles are CNC turned from 303 (1.4305) for good machinability.
The goal of the project was to bring the models from the 1920s and 1930s into stainless steel. The classics and MERKUR design icons such as 23C and 34C are intended to be preserved as brand ambassadors for the future. The INOX safety razors are visually and tactilely based on their originals and therefore feel just as premium. They still look great even after many shaves.
So at Merkur, Inox means traditional design in stainless steel quality that you can feel. In short, a safety razor that not only shaves well, but still looks good years later.
What makes a stainless steel safety razor so valuable?
A stainless steel safety razor is one of the highest quality tools in classic wet shaving. The material is highly corrosion resistant, durable, and hygienic.
Stainless steel offers clear advantages that users appreciate again and again.
- Long service life even with daily use
- Pleasant weight for controlled shaving
- Consistent precision thanks to stable head geometry
- Satin and knurled surfaces for a non slip and premium feel
- Resistance to moisture, soap residue and harsh environments
These properties ensure that an Inox safety razor remains reliable for many years. At the same time, stainless steel conveys a sense of quality that clearly stands out from cheaper materials.

Daily care
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water after shaving
- Loosen or remove the blade briefly to remove residue
- Dry briefly and store in an open position
Weekly cleaning
- Use a mild soap bath
- Clean the thread and head with a soft brush
- Dry the stainless steel thoroughly
Long term care benefits
- The safety razor stays free of deposits
- The blade sits cleanly and precisely in the head geometry
- The surface retains its satin premium look
Regular care supports hygiene and also extends the lifespan of a high quality stainless steel safety razor. Note: The razor blades made of chrome steel are the part in the system with the weakest corrosion protection. Rust usually starts from the blade.
